Concept Development
The 3D shapes draw on different influences of abstraction, and how artists have found patterns that reflect nature and translated them into human constructed shapes and forms.
Matthew Ronay through sculpture explores abstract primary forms which he feels to be innate in our human nature and subconscious.
Yunkaporta in his book, ‘Sand Talk’ introduces some of the lines, symbols, shapes used in the indigenous Australian Dreaming. These abstractions are a lens to view and make sense of the world, systems and natural phenomena. The book excerpt shows an example with the concept of creation, and how it is inextricably linked with time and place. This repeating outward shape can be recognised in the film ‘Annihilation’, as an extra-terrestrial point of origin, with similar themes to Yunkaporta’s depiction of creation.
